Some FRCC Students See Fall Financial Aid Returned to Government

In the midst of the government shutdown widely impacting the nation, some FRCC students have been impacted, too, in terms of their financial aid. Although federal financial aid systems have largely continued to operate as normal, a handful of students at FRCC experienced postponed updates from the National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS), pertaining to their loan limits and suitability for the Pell grant.

Upon being queried about how the government closure has impacted the financial aid of students at the college, David Lucci, the Director of Financial Aid at FRCC expressed, “What did occur for approximately 15 students, is that we received late notification updates from the National Student Loan Database (NLSDS), that students were approaching their undergraduate loan aggregate limits, or Pell lifetime eligibility usage limits.”

Some students received delayed alerts regarding their funding, highlighting that the shutdown impacted federal communications related to financial aid. For further information regarding how the government is responding to impacts on federal student aid processing, Lucci provided a link to a statement from the U.S. Department of Education, which is available here.

The updates about the funding came after the fall 2025 semester commenced, causing some financial support, intended for the fall semester, to be returned to the federal government.

Lucci mentioned, “We later received pushed records to us in late September 2025, after fall 2025 aid was applied and disbursed. Causing in some cases fall term aid to be returned. We have notified each of the affected students.”

Lastly, Lucci encouraged students to “contact us [the Financial Aid department] as soon as possible” if they still have worries about their financial aid. An additional link that was supplied by Lucci that directs people to a webpage where they can contact the college’s financial aid office may be accessed here.

Editor’s Note: David Lucci incorrectly calls the National Student Loan Data System the “National Student Loan Database.” The error is kept for posterity.

Correction at 9:21 PM November 14, 2025: “Some” was added to “FRCC students have been impacted, too,” clarifying that not all FRCC students were impacted/
