The Colorado Eagles Cheerleaders, known as the Eagle Chicks, represent far more than dance routines at hockey games. They are symbols of commitment, collaboration, and community impact – deeply connected to the spirit of Northern Colorado.
In the world of professional sports, few teams have a “spirit squad” quite like the Eagle Chicks.
Away from the arena, they inspire the next generation of dancers and serve as ambassadors for the Colorado Eagles’ core values. Their presence at every Eagles game creates an atmosphere like no other – they embody the pride that defines Eagle Country. In an exclusive interview, Hedy Lu Neidigh, director of the cheer team, and Melissa, the assistant director, along with a few cheerleaders, rookies and veterans, share their insights into what it means to be part of this unique and beloved team.
For Mrs. Hedy Lu Neidigh, the journey to becoming the Eagle Chicks’ director began as a leap of faith. “I was looking for new ways to expand my dance career,” she said. In 2014, encouraged by a friend, she auditioned for the Eagle Chicks and danced with them until 2016. Her love for the Eagles community, and the impact she made kept her coming back, she said.
This eventually led her to take on the director role. Hedy’s story reflects the passion that drives so many on the team, a desire to build connections through dance and social connections.
Melissa’s journey started similarly, in high school, when her dance coach, an Eagle Chick herself, introduced her to the world of professional cheerleading.
Melissa joined in 2013, after college, drawn by the opportunity to dance close to home. She was inspired by the Eagles’ mission to bring joy to Northern Colorado fans. As assistant director, her experience helps her to guide each new generation of Eagle Chicks.
A Colorado Eagles game is unlike any other hockey experience. Thanks in large part to the Eagle Chicks. “Our gameday atmosphere is unique,” Hedy says with pride. “Our fans are incredibly loyal and passionate about Eagle Country.”
The community aspect is something Hedy finds deeply fulfilling. For her, it’s not just about performing but also about creating an experience that unites fans and forms a powerful sense of belonging.
Melissa highlights the special connection the cheerleaders share with fans. She says “We’re here for them. They’re the reason we keep coming back.”
She points out that the Eagles organization is always innovating. They offer new routines each season to keep the gameday experience fresh and exciting for longtime fans. For both directors, this sense of community is what makes their roles so rewarding.
Blue Arena’s setup allows every fan to feel close to the action, making the Eagles’ home games an exhilarating experience from every seat.
“Whether it’s the cheapest seat or the most expensive, you’re right there with us,” says Melissa.
The fan experience is enhanced by the organization’s constant engagement. From giveaways, to special events and merchandise, they bring the community closer to the team.
For the Eagle Chicks, the intimate arena means a chance to interact directly with fans, creating a personal connection that extends beyond dance routines
Back in the Day, Hedy recalls watching Colorado Avalanche players, such as Forward Logan O’Connor, start their careers with the Eagles before moving on to the NHL.
“It’s thrilling for fans who are true hockey lovers, watching the rookies grow and eventually join the Avalanche,” she shares.
The Eagle Chicks’ contributions go beyond gameday, extending into the heart of Northern Colorado through charity events and community engagement: Alzheimer’s and cancer walks, charity drives, community outreach programs. For Hedy, these appearances are about giving back to the people who support them.
“It’s a privilege to be involved in these events,” she says.
One particularly cherished event is the Jr. Eagles Cheer Clinic. In 2023, at least 110 young girls get the chance to learn and dance with the Eagle Chicks.
“Seeing these girls grow and develop their skills is incredible,” Hedy says.
She noted how former participants of the Jr clinic have joined the professional team. The clinic fosters not just dance skills but also valuable life lessons like professionalism, teamwork, and perseverance. Qualities the Eagle Chicks demonstrate.
The journey to becoming an Eagle Chick doesn’t stop at the audition. The team undergoes a preparation process that includes but is not limited to boot camps, choreography sessions, and team-building exercises. Preparation for the season begins in July, as new recruits learn routines and sideline dances critical for maintaining the game’s energy.
“We try to keep it engaging and fun so the girls don’t burn out,” Melissa says.
Each practice is packed with drills, choreography, and “homework” designed to keep every member sharp and ready for the season.
A key part of the Eagle Chicks’ performance is consistency.
“Sidelines are what fans see the most, so we strive to make them perfect every time,” Hedy explains.
With only ten practices before the season, the team has little time to review, so the dancers are expected to come prepared.
This high standard demands quick focus and even faster dedication, a challenge that the Eagle Chicks meet with determination.
Melissa emphasizes that professional cheerleading is as much about consistency as it is about talent.
“Everything is challenging. We remind the girls that as Eagle Chicks, they’re representing the organization,” she said.
The transition from a high school or college dance team to a professional squad requires commitment and professionalism. Melissa notes that this demand for perfection doesn’t stop at just one performance—it’s about being able to deliver every single time, with energy, grace, and a smile.
Rookie cheerleader Kaitlyn, preparing for her first season, shares her excitement and nerves.
A lifelong resident of Fort Collins and a Rocky Mountain High School Alumni, Kaitlyn grew up watching the Eagles play and now feels honored to be part of the team.
“I’ve been dancing since I was three, and this is a way to give back to the community that’s supported me,” she said.
Practicing daily, Kaitlyn is ready to embrace the intensity of the season while working to improve with each performance.
Veterans Shayna and Laine, team captains with years of experience, reflect on the rewarding challenge of mentoring rookies.
“It’s so exciting to see rookies evolve and grow,” says Shayna, who’s been with the team for four years.
Laine, a second-year veteran, adds that they encourage rookies to quickly adapt to the professional setting.
“We push them because we know they’re capable,” she said.
For captains, guiding new dancers is a chance to share the skills and discipline they’ve developed over their careers.
The Colorado Eagles Cheerleaders are more than just performers; they are pillars of the Eagles’ legacy in Northern Colorado. They bring the drive, energy, passion, and community connection to every performance, whether it’s in the arena or at a charity event.
Under Hedy and Melissa’s guidance, they continue to build on the tradition of excellence, representing Eagle Country with pride and embodying the core values that make the Colorado Eagles a beloved team.
The Eagle Chicks dedication on and off the ice illustrates the impact that professional cheerleaders can have in their communities.
Through their hard work, they offer fans a unique gameday experience and inspire young dancers to pursue their dreams.
The Eagle Chicks may be the spirit of the Colorado Eagles, but they are also the heart of Northern Colorado – a passionate team driven by love for their community and a commitment to excellence.
As long as the puck drops and the arena fills with cheers, the Eagle Chicks will continue to shine, uniting fans and embodying the legacy of Eagle Country!
