Vatey Ouy, 2024 FRCC Jack Kent Cooke Scholarship Semifinalist

1600 applicants applied for the Jack Kent Cooke Scholarship this year. The scholarship, providing as much as $55,000 for two to three years of a student’s undergraduate degree, is highly competitive with only 459 individuals having been declared semi finalists so far. Among them was FRCC student Vatey Ouy.

Ouy, who is the FRCC Phi Theta Kappa Vice President of Communications and Recording, agreed to tell her story in an interview last Thursday. She shared that she was initially surprised at learning she’d been announced as a semifinalist and is aware of the large number of other applicants who applied, yet she remains hopeful. Ouy shared her academic goals and what degree she is currently working on, emphasizing how impactful the scholarship would be should she win it.

“Right now, I’m trying to get my associates in general engineering, but I’m also transferring to CSU next fall, which I’m doing mechanical engineering with (an) aerospace concentration,” stated Ouy.

Originally from Cambodia, Ouy shared the dreams she has in working towards successfully achieving her career goal in becoming an aerospace engineer, striving to be an inspiration to others in her home country. Ouy hopes to one day pave a path where other women can pursue the same career.

FRCC has many bright, outstanding students pursuing some big goals. Among them, Vatey Ouy has already proven to be such an empowering individual in the school.
