With our Coffee Den having only microwaveable food, the espresso machine down, and The Wolf Cafe not operational yet, we students are left with little options when it comes to solid brain food. This being said, might I suggest a brief drive from campus for some amazing award-winning BBQ? On an easy to miss location of 5160 W 120th Ave in Westminster sits GQue BBQ, an airy & an industrial-style space that commits to using all natural meats using pesticide-free hickory wood for smoking 7 days a week, both lunch and dinner.
GQue owner Jason Ganahl competed on the local and national barbecue circuit for years, earning the Rocky Mountain BBQ Association’s Team of the Year award and placing high in several of the top national competitions sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbecue Society. His recipes translate well to a restaurant setting, and his meats are among the most consistent across the board, whether they are ribs, brisket, wings, sausage or turkey. And sides are done right, too, with smoky beans, tangy slaw with a sweet hint of apple, and kettle chips meant for munching. Do yourself a favor and get a sampler platter of everything GQue smokes; your belt may complain, but you certainly won’t regret it. Ganahl’s time on the competitive circuit taught him to aim for big flavors over regional specificity, so every bite is bold and beautiful.
Be sure to be there for the daily happy hour (Mon-Fri, 2-5PM) for dollar beers and food deals. A word to the wise: whereas they open at 11AM daily, they will, however, go till they run out, so get in while supplies last for some scrumptious meat candy.
