The FRCC Westminster campus may be lacking in established sports teams, but it makes up for it with the clubs the school hosts. One such club is the Volleyball Club which meets every Tuesday and Thursday in the High Plains Fitness Center.
On those days between 11:30 am and 2 pm, a congregation of students gathers to play volleyball with each other, all with varying skill levels.
Chyna Rodriguez, one of the captains, explained the essence of the club.
“It’s just a fun get-together, [we] play a sport we all like or love and just joke around!” they said.
Shortly after this remark, the other two captains began to build off of each other and have a laugh as they explained the rest of the club. Their friendships were just as intense as it was incredibly infectious, and it helped reveal why the club has had a consistent following throughout the semester.
In addition to meeting at the gym, the captains explained as well that, sometimes, they will meet outside of school to play more volleyball or even buy food together, just so that everyone can get to know each other a little bit more. They also welcome anyone to join the club, whether they played on their high school team for years or if someone has never known just how light a volleyball can be.
Based on the interview with the three captains of the club, it is clear this is an easy choice for an enriching and fun club to join, especially if someone is having a hard time socializing on campus or stressing over school. It happens all year round, so students can join at literally any time they please.
There is not just the Volleyball Club for sports clubs, however. Equally exciting is the Basketball Club which runs at the same time that the Volleyball Club does, except only on different days of the week: Mondays and Wednesdays. A couple players explained what the basketball club does when it meets up those days.
Kaden Ricicki elaborated that “We actually just played a 3v3 today [during club]. But we pretty much just play games when we show up between classes and stuff.”
Atreus Martin then built off of Kaden and explained that “we could have some tournaments and even some 5v5’s if more people show up [to the club].”
When asked how the players get to know each other a bit, Kaden said, “We are trying to get a chance to go to the Rec Center and play some basketball there, too. And we talk and do all that [too].”
The club may currently not have a lot of people who show up, but it is always on a consistent basis that they do show up. Even after the club is over, some members stay back so that they can shoot a few more hoops or converse with each other. This only demonstrates how close-knit the club is, even as the semester is winding down more and more. If volleyball isn’t quite your thing, or you have a passion (or even just the occasional itch) for basketball, the Basketball Club is sure to be just as fun and invigorating as the Volleyball Club!
The Volleyball Club meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11:30 am to 2:00 pm in the High Plains Fitness Center. The Basketball Club meets on Mondays and Wednesdays from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm in the High Plains Fitness Center. Anyone is free to join either club all year round. Both clubs require an eWolf card as it is needed to get into the Fitness Center.
