Everyone who uses a computer or drives on the road has seen the work of type designer Steve Matteson.
Imagine the bright green glow of the Xbox logo. Matteson was on the team that designed the typeface (commonly known as a font) on every Xbox.
Toyota’s marketing materials are an especially prominent example of his work. He hand-designed every font on each advertising asset Toyota uses.
Throughout his career, he designed many font families for Microsoft, visible on many products sold by the company.
Matteson recently visited FRCC’s Boulder County Campus for a presentation hosted by the Multimedia and Graphic Design Department.
15 students and faculty members attended, most of them enrolled in a Typography 1 course at FRCC.
Matteson’s presentation included many snippets of experiences from his career. He also described some of the “nuts-and-bolts” of designing typefaces.
He shared graphite drawings from his design process, giving the audience a peek behind the curtain of the work of a world-renowned typeface designer.
